There Are Not Enough South Asians in Football | Midnight Ramadan League & FIFA 21

Of 4,000 men's professional players in the Premier League and English Football League, just ten are of South Asian heritage. That is not enough.

The Midnight Ramadan League, co-founded by Obayed Hussain, kicks off after the evening meal of Iftar and late-night prayers, to enable players to break their fast before playing football.

With the help and sponsorship of @EA SPORTS FIFA , the league has gone from strength to strength in its aim to make football more inclusive for all. To raise awareness of the Midnight Ramadan League, EA SPORTS has sponsored the league and created a special-edition kit, now available in FIFA 21.

how about we stop judging players on their race and start looking at what they offer on the pitch, better yet how about stopping with that Ramadan night nonsense. As a Muslim myself I don't want my religious beliefs to be part of some kind of marketing scheme that is related to a gambling game (ultimate team). The same goes for the Christmas pack and all this shit

The moment you say people need to be represented by their "own kind", you make a big mistake. I don't care about your origin if you're a good player. If you're good enough, you will make it. We're not the 1950's anymore. Your talent and the content of your character are what counts, not your country of origin.

Probably, they do not have quite tradition in Football as they have in other sports. Of there are any great players, they would play at high levels, as the white ones or the black ones. I do not think it is a problem of racism, sincerely. Even not this time.

I don't won't to be Debbie Downer but South Asians don't have a the natural explosive athleticisms to be good in high level athletic sports like soccer. There is a reason why India and Pakistan have won so few Olympic gold medals, despite having huge populations. And most of the South Asians who have reached a high level are usually mixed raced like Chris Coleman and Michael Chopra who where half white or Neil Taylor and Hamza Choudhury who are mixed Black. India do better in sports that don't attract the best athletes like field hockey, cricket and non-tennis racket sports. I also don' buy that excuse that the South Asian community are more academic and that is why there are so few South Asian players, because West Africans are the most academic group because in the UK West African kids average more GCSE's that any group and in the US West Africans are now the most educated group with the most degrees per person than any group in the USA, yet you still see plenty of West Africans British players in England like Saka, Hudson-Odoi, Joe Gomez, Reise Nelson and many others in the Americans sports. This is because they have the explosive athleticism to excel in highly athletic sports.

It's not just strict parenting (which is decreasing because of new generation of parents) but negative stereotypes from uncultured scouts and coaches is what's stopping talented Asians from progressing in grassroots football.

  110. Aidy Gooner

    Aidy GoonerMánuði síðan

Some of these amateur coaches only look for strong and quick players which shows their lack of understanding in football as these are just physical attributes of players, not technical attributes which can also improve with coaching and game time which helps improve decision making. When it comes to people of ethnic minority background it's mainly afro-caribbeans who make the grade because of stereotypes about their physique and fitness, and actually they're not even rated technically even if they do have technical ability. Like Jamie Vardy you just got to make your own road to success in football or outside of football and eventually you'll be spotted and appreciated.

  111. vikram samanta

    vikram samantaMánuði síðan

Exactly..lack of sense in coaches..they don't know what they are looking for . It's not about which kid can dribble how many people ...it's about his technique , approach to playing, will that work with the best players? How deep does he understand the game?

  112. Mujtaba Nadeem

    Mujtaba NadeemMánuði síðan

Are they talented enough? Why are there so few Indonesian, Indian, Pakistani,... players? Why are they no football powerhouses? Why is Chian PR no football powerhouse? a lack of talent, probably not, a lack of infrastructure? A lack of knowlegde? Too much corruption? Or are they not as interested and invested in playing football? While I do agree that there are not enough South Asian players in Europe playing on a decent level, there must be a reason and it is probably not racism because their own national teams and domestic leagues aren't that good either. So maybe it is an idea to investigate why this is happening instead of advertising that FIFA(a terrible game) is adding/should add more cultural references to that region (which strangely enough, ends up being about Islam as if South Asia is only Islamist. why is there no Hindu or Sikh or Buddist reference for that matter?)

  126. saudi.

    saudi.Mánuði síðan

@Akash Verma but most muslims there are from south asia, so it makes sense why they are linked. also, i dont think its exlusively for muslims. it's just named after ramadan cause it happens then and the timing are made keeping the fasting hours in mind
